Hyperhidrosis treatment

Hyperhidrosis treatment

Botulinum toxin is an effective, safe treatment for excessive sweating by blocking the nerve signal that activates the sweat glands. It can significantly reduce sweating and meaningfully improve quality of life.

Common treatment areas

Focal hyperhidrosis can be treated in a range of areas, as needed.

Underarms

The most common area for treatment.

Allows a significant reduction in sweating for several months.

Palms

Suitable for patients whose sweating affects work, handshakes, and daily activities.

Soles

Helps reduce excessive foot sweating and improve day-to-day comfort.

Forehead and face

Treatment for facial and scalp hyperhidrosis, especially in patients with noticeable sweating during activity, stress, or heat exposure.

Scalp

Reduces excessive scalp sweating and improves daily comfort.

ChestChest Hyperhidrosis

Suitable for patients with increased sweating in the chest area, especially in hot weather or during physical activity.

BackBack Hyperhidrosis

Allows a significant reduction in back sweating and improves quality of life and self-confidence.

AbdomenAbdominal Hyperhidrosis

Treatment of the abdominal area for patients with focal or more widespread sweating there.

GroinGroin Hyperhidrosis

An advanced treatment for groin hyperhidrosis. It may help reduce discomfort, skin irritation, and a persistent feeling of moisture.

Questions & answers

How does the treatment work?

The material works by blocking the nerve signal that activates the sweat glands in the area where it is injected.

We do not damage the gland directly — we act on the nerve activity that reaches it.

As a result:

  • A significant reduction in sweating in the treated area
  • No compensatory sweating as seen with some other hyperhidrosis treatments
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Improved quality of life

Botulinum toxin acts only where it is injected, so it does not cause compensatory hyperhidrosis.

Who is the treatment suitable for?

The treatment is suitable for patients with focal hyperhidrosis that may affect quality of life, self-confidence, and daily function. Areas that can be treated include:

  • Underarms
  • Palms and soles
  • Face, forehead, and scalp
  • Chest, back, abdomen, and groin

Additional areas can also be treated with botulinum toxin when appropriate. Suitability, the treated area, and the required dose are decided after a medical consultation, based on the location and severity of sweating and each patient’s individual characteristics.

How is the treatment performed?

Treatment begins with an assessment of the sweating areas, symptom severity, and their impact on quality of life.

Next, superficial, targeted injections of botulinum toxin are performed in the treated area, temporarily blocking the nerve signal to the sweat glands and thereby reducing sweat production.

The treatment usually takes 30–40 minutes. When needed, a topical anesthetic can be used to reduce discomfort during the procedure.

In most cases you can return to routine immediately afterward, following the aftercare instructions given at the end of the visit.

How many treatments are needed?

Usually one treatment is enough.

The effect typically lasts 6–9 months.

Treatment can be repeated when sweating begins to return.

When are results visible?

Results usually appear within 3–14 days.

The treatment can significantly reduce sweating in the treated area.

The effect typically lasts 6–9 months.

Will the body compensate with sweating elsewhere?

No. One of the most common questions is whether reducing underarm sweating causes more sweating on the back, abdomen, or other areas.

The answer is no. Botulinum toxin acts only where it is injected and does not cause compensatory hyperhidrosis.

That phenomenon is mainly associated with sympathectomy surgery (ETS), not botulinum toxin treatment.

Does the body develop resistance to treatment?

In most cases, no. When treatment is performed with appropriate doses and intervals, excellent results can continue for years of repeated treatments. Resistance to botulinum toxin is rare.

Is the treatment painful?

The treatment involves only mild discomfort and is performed with very fine needles. In sensitive areas such as the palms or soles, a topical anesthetic cream or other measures can be used to reduce discomfort.

How long does the treatment last?

The effect usually lasts 6 to 9 months, and sometimes longer, depending on the treated area and individual response. When sweating returns, treatment can be repeated.

Does the treatment stop sweating completely?

The goal is to significantly reduce sweat in the treated area. Most patients achieve a marked reduction, but the degree of reduction varies between individuals.

Does the treatment impair the body’s ability to cool itself?

No. The treatment affects only the treated area and does not impair overall temperature regulation. The body continues to sweat normally through the remaining sweat glands.

Can the treatment be done in summer?

Absolutely. In fact, many patients choose treatment before or during the summer months, when sweating is more noticeable and more disruptive to quality of life.

Can I return to routine immediately?

In most cases you can return to routine immediately after treatment, without significant downtime.

At the end of the visit the treating physician will give personal instructions according to the treated area and the nature of the procedure. If needed, temporary avoidance of certain activities may be advised during the first hours after injection.

Is hyperhidrosis a medical condition?

Yes. Hyperhidrosis is a recognized medical condition of excessive sweating beyond what is needed for temperature regulation. Beyond discomfort, it can affect self-confidence, social life, and daily function.

What are the possible side effects?

In most cases you can return to routine immediately after treatment, without significant downtime.

After the injection, mild and temporary side effects may appear, including:

  • Redness
  • Mild swelling
  • Local sensitivity
  • Small bruises at the injection area

In most cases these effects resolve within hours to a few days.

As with any medical treatment, rarer risks and side effects also exist. Before treatment, a full medical assessment is performed, including an explanation of benefits, possible risks, and aftercare instructions.

Can hyperhidrosis treatment be combined with other botulinum treatments?

Yes. Hyperhidrosis treatment can be combined with additional aesthetic or medical botulinum treatments, according to need and medical suitability.

In summary

Botulinum toxin treatment for hyperhidrosis blocks the nerve signal to the sweat glands in the treated area and allows a significant reduction in sweating without compensatory sweating.

Treatment is tailored to the area and personal need in a professional consultation and diagnosis visit.
