What guidelines say
2024 AAD guidelines strongly recommend topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and topical antibiotics in appropriate combinations, and isotretinoin in severe cases. For chemical peel, laser, and microneedling as treatment for active acne, evidence was insufficient for a formal recommendation.
Where clinic treatments fit
Medical peel can serve as an adjunct for spots and texture, especially post-acne hyperpigmentation, per dermatologic consensus—not as sole treatment for active inflammatory acne.
Polynucleotides have also been studied for acne scars, with reported texture improvement in small trials. Vampire treatment (facial PRP/iPRF) is used clinically to encourage skin renewal but does not replace treatment of active acne itself.
